Schlussendluch geht es ja icht um die Webseite. Sondern um die Seriösität und die Technologie. Ich persönlich wiederum finde die Beetagg Webseite zu “grafünzelt”. Als Grafiker kann ich mir dieses Urteil durchaus erlauben.

Dennoch muss ich sagen, dass die Beetagg-Seiten optisch ansprechender finde. Was mir nicht gefällt: Ich sehe bei beiden keine Möglichkeit in deutscher Sprache einen Blog mit Meinungsaustausch, Ideen. Alles immer in englisch.

Ich habe auf einigen Webseiten gesehen, dass sie Code-Generatoren selbst anbieten. Gibt es sowas nur gegen Kauf-Lizenz oder auch als Free-Script?

For 2D Code to become widely used, it is first necessary for QR Code specification to be clearly defined and made public. In addition, QR Code must be freely usable by users.

The background behind the popularity of bar codes, is specification disclosure. Today, there are very few bar codes with closed specifications or strict patent protection.

QR Code is open in the sense that the specification of QR Code is disclosed and that the patent right owned by Denso Wave is not exercised.

Das Problem ist nicht die Decoding Software, das Problem liegt beim Code. Beim Decoden zolle ich professionell dem Beetagg durchaus Respekt.

Zurzeit haben wir ca. 20 bekannte proprietäre Codes und zwei bzw. drei offene Standards.

Die Idee des proprietären Ansatzes ist ein geschlossenes, von einer Firma alleine dominiertes Mobile Tagging System aufzubauen. Dieser Ansatz ist meiner Meinung nach zum Scheitern verurteilt – ein Vergleich zwischen Südkorea (proprietäre Ansätze) und Japan (offener Standard) zeigt dies sehr augenscheinlich.

Die Gefahr ist, dass die proprietären Codes, die ganze Idee des Mobile Tagging in Gefahr bringen – da eine “Balkanisierung” passiert und die Konsumenten hochgradig verwirrt werden.

Weiter müssen wir damit rechnen, dass einige der Mobile Tagging Firmen eingehen werden und diejenigen die auf den falschen proprietären Ansatz vertraut haben, werden in diesem Fall alles verlieren. Setzen Sie hingegen auf einen Standardcode wie QR Code und Datamatrix dann ist dies nicht gegeben, da es bereits jetzt genügend Firmen gibt, die diese Codes unterstützen.

Dass Marktführer wie Nokia (40% des Handy-Marktes weltweit), das W3C, Google, alle 3 japanischen Telcos, die IATA (d.h. 94% aller Fluggesellschaften beim Mobile Ticketing) auf QR Codes und auf Datamatrix setzen, sollte einem zu Denken geben.

Wettbewerb finde ich alleweil gut, wenn er der Sache dient. Aber Wettbewerb, der die Sache an sich in Gefahr bringt, ist höchst problematisch.

It is a game. In the mathematical sense. Here is the payoff matrix: You commit to working on a standard, or not. The standard may take off or it may not.

If you don’t commit to the standard, and it doesn’t work, (which of course it won’t if no one else does) then life, and your proprietary ceiling technology, continues. No innovation.

If you do commit to it and it it does work, then a whole new market is enabled: This is the disruptive case. There is some effort involved moving the company to the standard, and often to help build the standard. You might join W3C to help make it happen. A certain amount of effort. There is a major long term return.

One of the most difficult things for some companies to learn is that this is not a zero-sum game. We are so used to battling over a fixed market, or battling over fixed resources, that we tend to assume everything is such that we can only win what our competitors lose. But when we make a whole new market space, like the Web, or like GSM actually, then we are in fact together battling the human condition such as inefficiency, poverty and ignorance.

Now, what about the corner cases? The fear seems to be of going for the standard and it not taking off. Well, the loss in this case is the engineering time to tool up for the standard, which could have been saved. But is a very finite loss.

On the other hand, what if you decide not to go for the standard and it does take off? Everything happens, the new market appears, and you are not there. The pace of everything ramps up dramatically, and you are left standing still. The costs of retooling to a standard get much bigger as time passes. In this conference we all can see the stresses on phone companies, and we know the dis-empowerment of all travelers from the fact that the GSM standards and frequencies are not quite global — and we know the benefits from the fact that are becoming so. Other cases spring to mind. On the Internet, for example, streaming media are available in many incompatible formats.

Often this is due to companies wanting to profit from ceiling technologies. This involves making a high income from the technology itself rather than letting its take off. This in turn requires patents, and of course that the owned technology dominates. Hence the battles over VHS and Betamax, HD DVD and Blu-Ray, and so on.

So as the Web platform and the mobile phone converge — what do we want the result to be a foundation or a ceiling technology? Clearly, a foundation. A mobile phone — or whatever device we carry around which uses GSM technology and its successors — is going to be everywhere, and everyone will have one. It has do be designed to be universal. So that everyone can use it. So that you can do anything with it.

The choice is the new platform being a privately owned walled garden, or a competitive open platform. Both models can work in the medium term. But the open model opens up new things which we can only try to imagine.

Uiii. Das kam aber etwas viel Propaganda von Beetagg rüber. Etwas Aufklärung ist sicher angebracht:

Beetagg ist ein proprietärer 2D Barcode, wie Shotcode, EZ Code usw. Beetagg verschlüsselt alle Daten, d.h. im Code selbst sind nur Zahlen verschlüsselt, die “nur” über den Beetagg Server wieder entschlüsselt werden können.

Dies kann man auch bei QR Codes und Datamatrix machen und erhält somit kleine Codes, nur ist man dann ebenso proprietär.
Verschlüsselt man hingegen URLs direkt, dann ist das die offenste Art etwas zu verschlüsseln. Das schöne an der offenen Art ist, dass diese QR Codes von den QR Code Readern von Nokia, Google (ZXing), allen japanischen Handys wie z.B. Sharp und von Quickmark, i-nigma, Kaywa, Gavitec usw. gelesen werden können.

Weiterer Unterschied: Proprietäre Codes werden eigentlich nur online eingesetzt (d.h. immer mit Internet-Verbindung bzw. Kosten), die Offline Möglichkeit für Text, SMS, Email, Vcards gibt es nur bei QR Codes und Datamatrix.

Flexibilität:
QR Codes werden in Japan flächendeckend seit 2003 für alles eingesetzt und sind ein absoluter Erfolg

Bisher hat einzig der japanische Ansatz des offenen Standards zum Erfolg geführt, alle proprietären Ansätze seit 2003 sind bisher gescheitert. Es ist schade, wenn Beetagg hier Propaganda macht, die sich argumentativ nicht aufrechterhalten lässt und zudem noch behauptet sie könnten was, was QR Codes nicht können – das Gegenteil ist der Fall.

Sorry, aber Misinformation nervt mich einfach.
